New Delhi: Search engine giant Google on Wednesday celebrated the 200th birth anniversary of French painter Rosa Bonheur, one of the most prominent female artists of the 19th century.
Google Doodle paid homepage to the legendary cattleman and sculptor, whose artistry and successful career inspired future generations of women in art with a beautiful graphic.
The special animated graphic features a sculpture of Rosa Bonheur depicting a flock of sheep on canvas.
Who was Rosa Bonheur?
Rosa Bonheur was born on March 16, 1822 in Bordeaux, France. His father, himself a landscape painter, assisted him in his primary education.
However Bonheer’s craving for education and a career in the arts was extraordinary for women of her time. He studied carefully for many years and closely followed the development of artistic traditions before the drawings were immortalized on canvas.
Bonheer’s reputation as an animal painter and sculptor grew in the 1840s. Many of his works were exhibited at the prestigious Paris Salon from 1841 to 1853.
Important Artifacts and Awards
In 1853, Bonheur gained international fame with his painting “The Horse Fair”, which depicted a horse market held in Paris. As his best-known portrait, this painting is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
To honor this famous painting, the French Empress Eugenie awarded Bonheur in 1865 with one of the country’s most prestigious awards, the Legion of Honour.
