Bonheer’s reputation as an animal painter and sculptor grew in the 1840s. Many of his works were exhibited at the prestigious Paris Salon.
Who was Rosa Bonheur?
Rosa Bonheur was born on March 16, 1822 in Bordeaux, France. His father, himself a landscape painter, assisted him in his primary education.
However Bonheer’s craving for education and a career in the arts was extraordinary for women of her time.
In 1853, Bonheur gained international fame with his painting “The Horse Fair”, which depicted a horse market held in Paris. As his best-known portrait, this painting is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
